Welcome to Zanzibar: Culture, Currency & Conscious Travel in 2025

Sandy white beaches. Enticing music and dance. The slow, soothing rhythm of Swahili life. Since time immemorial, Zanzibar entices people from all corners of the world with its rich blend of tropical allure and history. But 2025 comes with changes re-shaping how visitors get to experience her magic—not just the warm, turquoise waters, but in their wallets too.

A New Chapter: Tighter Currency Regulations in Tanzania

As of May 2025, Tanzania has introduced a major policy shift that requires all local transactions to be conducted exclusively in Tanzanian shillings (TZS). This new regulation impacts all tourists—whether you're enjoying a luxurious honeymoon or backpacking on a budget.

These new regulations imposed by the Bank of Tanzania took effect on March 28th. They strictly forbid the use of any foreign currency—no business is allowed to quote, price, or accept payment in foreign currency for domestic goods or services.

How This Impacts Tourists

Here’s what to keep in mind as you plan your Zanzibar getaway:

  • Always have Tanzanian shillings on you. First order of business on arrival should be exchanging your currency for TZS.
  • Use licensed bureaus only. Do not rely on black-market options. Exchange at licensed banks or forex bureaus.
  • Mobile banking is widely used. Many vendors accept payment through platforms like M-Pesa or Mixx by Yas (Formerly Tigo Pesa)
  • Bring debit and credit cards. They're widely accepted at hotels.

Why Change Now? What’s the Big Picture?

It might be a slight inconvenience for visitors, but this change aims to strengthen and stabilize the Tanzanian shilling.

  • In late 2024, the TZS was the best-performing currency, gaining 9.5% in six months.
  • However, it dipped by 3.6% against the dollar in early 2025.
  • Despite the fluctuation, Tanzania's reserves remain strong, estimated at 5.6 billion USD, enough to cover 4½ months of imports.
  • The economy expanded by 5.5% in 2024, with inflation remaining low at 3.1%.
