Most people come to Zanzibar for the beaches. And yes, the beaches are extraordinary. But if you stay a little longer — or simply look beyond the obvious — the island reveals a completely different side of itself.

Here are 10 experiences that go off the beaten path without going off the deep end.

1. Walk on the Ocean Floor at Nungwi

Zanzibar SeaWalk underwater helmet experience

No diving license. No swimming skills required. The Zanzibar SeaWalk lets you walk on the actual seabed wearing a pressurized helmet, surrounded by coral and tropical fish. It sounds gimmicky. It genuinely isn't.

The experience runs from Nungwi Beach and is guided by certified divers throughout. Kids, non-swimmers, and anyone who's always been curious about what's underneath — this is your entry point.

2. Swim Inside Kuza Cave

Kuza Cave limestone pool Jambiani Zanzibar

Hidden in the south of the island near Jambiani, Kuza Cave is an ancient limestone grotto with a crystal-clear mineral water pool inside. The light that filters through the cracks in the rock makes the whole place feel slightly surreal.

It's more than just a swim — the site also offers drumming workshops, Swahili cooking lessons, and a small cultural center. A social enterprise, so your entry fee goes back into the local community.

3. Discover Maalum — Zanzibar's Secret Natural Pool

Maalum natural cave pool Paje Zanzibar

Less visited than Kuza, Maalum is a natural swimming hole near Paje that most visitors never find. The water is fresh, the setting is quiet, and the experience is as far from a resort pool as you can get.

No infrastructure, no crowds. Just a hole in the ground filled with impossibly clear water. Bring a local guide — it's not well signposted.

4. Kayak Through the Mangroves

Mangrove kayaking Chwaka Bay Zanzibar

Zanzibar has 8 species of mangrove trees, and paddling through them is a completely different experience from anything you'll find on the beach. Crabs, herons, kingfishers, calm waterways — it's almost meditative.

You can go by kayak or SUP. Most operators are based around Chwaka Bay on the east coast. The tours work for beginners and the guides are genuinely knowledgeable about the ecosystem.

5. Cook with a Local Family

Skip the cooking class at the resort. In Jambiani, a handful of families open their homes to small groups for a real Swahili cooking session. One of the best-known is run by chef Okala, who learned everything from his grandmother and sources every ingredient locally.

You'll make things like spiced rice, grilled tuna, and pumpkin soup — then eat them together at the family table. It's one of those experiences that stays with you longer than any restaurant meal.

6. Jump Out of a Plane Over the Beach

Yes, there is a skydiving center in Zanzibar. Yes, every single jump lands on the beach at Kendwa. The center operates year-round and offers both tandem jumps and full AFF courses for those who want to go further.

Freefall over the Indian Ocean with the Zanzibar coastline below you is, objectively, one of the more absurd and brilliant things you can do on this island.

7. Sail to Uzi Island on a Ngalawa

Uzi Island, just off the south coast of Unguja, sees very few tourists. There's no resort, no infrastructure — just a fishing community living at a pace that has nothing to do with the tourist trail.

Getting there involves crossing a causeway or hiring a ngalawa (the traditional outrigger canoe used by local fishermen). If you time the tides wrong, you come back by boat. That's part of the adventure.

8. Watch the Forodhani Jumping Boys

Every evening in Stone Town, a group of young locals perform dives and acrobatic jumps from the seawall into the ocean at Forodhani Gardens. They're not a formal show — they do it for the joy of it, and for tips if you're feeling generous.

It's the kind of spontaneous, joyful street scene that doesn't exist in many places anymore. Go at sunset, grab a Zanzibar pizza from the night market stalls nearby, and just watch.

9. Stargaze with an African Storyteller

Stargazing night sky Milky Way Zanzibar

Far from city lights, Zanzibar's night sky is extraordinary. A handful of eco-lodges and local operators now run dedicated astrotourism evenings — a mix of astronomy and traditional Swahili oral storytelling under the Milky Way.

It sounds niche. It is niche. But if you've never heard an African legend told outdoors at night with the Southern Cross above you, it's hard to describe how good it is.

10. Catch the Sauti za Busara Music Festival

Every February, Stone Town transforms for a long weekend around Sauti za Busara — rated by the BBC World Service as one of Africa's best and most respected music events. Artists from across the continent perform in the historic Old Fort: Taarab, afrobeats, traditional percussion, modern Swahili pop, all 100% live.

It's one of the rare occasions where you'll find yourself shoulder-to-shoulder with Zanzibaris, not just tourists.

Zanzibar rewards curiosity. The more you look beyond the obvious, the more the island gives back.
